Purpose Statement
The job of Lead High School Groundskeeper is done for the purpose/s of providing guidance, assistance and supervision while maintaining safe and attractive athletic fields, school grounds areas for students, staff and public; ensuring the availability of required equipment; protecting against erosion; maintaining grounds for assemblies and/or recreational activities; ensuring assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner; overseeing and supporting scheduled activities at the stadium facilities and directing assigned workers.

ESSENTIAL Functions

  • Assists with personnel functions (e.g. hiring/termination recommendations, planning, scheduling, coordinating activities, training, advising, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assists Certified Chemical Applicator with a variety of activities (e.g. applications, maintaining chemical and equipment inventory, records, etc.) for the purpose of providing support to assigned personnel.
  • Coordinates a variety of items (e.g. daily schedules, groundwater conservation, outside service contracts, etc.) for the purpose of meeting district requirements.
  • Coordinates staff and/or supports assigned activities and/or projects (e.g. band festivals, sporting tournaments, assemblies, etc.) for the purpose of providing support to district functions and/or conforming to administrative, state and/or federal requirements.
  • Coordinates with Assistant Grounds Coordinator, site administrators and school groups for the purpose of maximizing aesthetic appearance and health of landscape areas.
  • Fulfills stadium supervisor role in evenings and on weekends for sporting events on a rotating schedule as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient operation of the facility for the enjoyment of fans and players.
  • Inspects district sporting, grounds and landscape areas (e.g. fencing, concrete/masonry, parking lots, field markings, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that staff performance is meeting established standards for proper maintenance and care.
  • Oversees all aspects of grounds and landscaping (e.g. coordinating work assignments,
    pesticide/herbicide applications, inspecting and/or evaluating projects, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that projects are completed in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with state and federal regulations and required reports are submitted.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars (e.g. sporting turf including warm, cool, synthetic fields, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information required to perform job functions.
  • Prepares materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, procedures, manuals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Assists in the procurement of equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently.
  • Recommends procedures and/or actions for the purpose of providing direction for meeting the district’s goals and objectives.
  • Responds to emergencies for the purpose of determining and implementing appropriate actions required to resolve situation; including after-hours response.
  • Reviews work order requirements (e.g. hours required, equipment needs, etc.) for the purpose of prioritizing work orders and scheduling assignments.
  • Supervises both contracted and in-house landscape maintenance and installation crews for the purpose of ensuring maximum production capability and efficiency.
  • Supervises district-wide snow and ice removal (e.g. scheduling, staffing, deploying work crews, equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe area clear of snow, in all necessary locations.
  • Supports assigned administrative personnel for the purpose of providing assistance with their administrative functions.
  • Transports a variety of items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, plants, soil, fertilizer, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at the job site.
  • Works assigned stadium activities during evenings and weekends for the purpose of ensuring scheduled activities run smoothly and the facility is properly setup, operated and secured.
  • Works closely with Athletic Directors, booster club personnel, coaches, etc. during stadium events for the purpose of ensuring scheduled activities run smoothly, efficiently and safely.

Other Functions
Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in grounds maintenance; adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.  Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of shrub, tree and lawn planting and care; herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance; proper use and maintenance of tools and power equipment used in grounds maintenance; health and safety regulations; and methods of organizing, scheduling and prioritizing work loads.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: providing work direction to assigned employees; understanding and following oral and written directions; working independently with little direction; planning and organizing work; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others; and preparing accurate records.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; operating within a defined budget. utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:
significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, 50% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

  • Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Equivalency: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area is preferred.
