About the Position: As a member of our Park Operations team, Parks Maintenance Technicians are responsible for our entire system. A strong desire to work outside, maintaining the general aesthetic and integrity of our parks, right of ways, and trails is necessary for success with our department. Knowledge of the green industry and landscape maintenance is our technicians’ baseline. The structure of our operations thrives on specialization in specific aspects of the green industry. We are building success and innovation in horticulture, sports field management, turf specialists, irrigation technicians, arborist, open space, plant health, cemetery grounds, facility maintenance, and event venue management.
About the divisions, at a glance:
Horticulturalist:
Horticulturalists design, propagate, plant, and maintain all of our planting spaces and rights-of-way throughout the parks system. We are developing greenhouse growing operations and specializing in native and water-wise landscapes. Horticulturalists are critical to our high-profile landscape beds and renovations.
Sports Field Grounds:
Training and expertise will be developed in the skills of sports field maintenance. Skinned area maintenance, sports turf management, synthetic surfaces, racquet courts, and large event venues are all part of our sports facilities crew. Become part of a team providing some of the best-maintained sports fields in Colorado at our regional sports complex, Canyon View Park, which hosts numerous valley sports clubs and tournaments from across our state; Lincoln Park Sports Complex, which hosts the National Junior College World Series, the Grand Junction Jackalopes Baseball Club, Colorado Mesa University, and our satellite locations at Columbine and Kronkright fields.
Turf Specialist:
Under the guidance of a lead worker, this position will assist in keeping a maintenance schedule; assist in training seasonal staff in mowing, edging, string trimming, and other tasks associated with lawn and parks maintenance; make recommendations in keeping a schedule and equipment needs. Responsibility is to the entire parks system, with specialization and training in turf management and turf disease/pest management. Job duties to include mowing, string trimming, edging, herbicide application, aerating, trash collection and fertilizer programs.
Irrigation Technician:
Inspect the condition of assigned systems, grounds, equipment, and facilities; perform installations, repairs, and replacements, as necessary. Install, adjust, maintain and repair electrical timers, electronic/hydraulic valves and controllers. Operate and maintain irrigation and sprinkler systems including pump stations, underground piping, valves, wiring, sprinklers, and controllers; check for broken lines, heads, and other parts; determine watering needs for assigned areas and establish watering schedules. Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports, and logs to ensure efficient watering at all conventional parks and horticultural areas. Specialization in water auditing, backflow prevention, pumps, and filtration systems.
Arborist:
Our arborists are required to gain credentials through the International Society of Arboriculture. Our staff is assigned to planting, trimming, and removal of trees in our urban canopy and landscapes. This is a high-risk/high reward position working at heights, operating chainsaws, bucket trucks, grapples, and chippers.
Open Space Technician:
Open Space Technicians are assigned to our growing trail system and open spaces. Work focused on will include revegetation areas, trail maintenance, building/maintenance of open space properties, renovation and construction of new trails and properties.
Plant Health Technician:
Plant Health Technicians are required to gain credentials with the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Our technicians/applicators manage pests in our urban canopy, turf areas, trails, and landscape beds. They will make recommendations on proper practices and integrated pest management strategies.
Cemetery Grounds:
Our cemetery operations include Orchard Mesa and Crowne Pointe cemetery. This position is all aspects of grounds maintenance, irrigation, mowing, string trimming, and burials.
Facilities Technician:
Training and expertise will be utilized/developed in the skills of facility maintenance. Amenities such as playgrounds and other park features, renovation of shelters, park infrastructure and amenities, and construction. This is a diverse role within our parks system and an opportunity to apply basic skills in plumbing, concrete work, welding, HVAC maintenance, handyman skills, carpentry, and construction.
About Grand Junction’s Parks Operations:
The City of Grand Junction’s Park Operations Division includes park and trail maintenance, forestry and open space management, sports facilities, horticulture, and cemeteries. It is responsible for 35 developed and seven fully or partially undeveloped parks within the City. In addition to developed parks, the Division also maintains riverfront and urban trails, park and street trees, and open space natural areas across the City. This Division operates and maintains over 350 acres of developed parks, 285 acres of undeveloped parks, 55 acres of school properties, 37,000 public trees, 600 acres of open space, and 21 miles of riverfront and urban trails with 45 full-time positions and over 30 seasonal staff members.
