This position leads a crew and participates in the mowing, landscaping, and spraying of the sports turf fields within the Neighborhood Parks Division.
Essential Job Functions
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Applies pesticides as necessary. Assists with the planning of a comprehensive pesticide and fertilizer plan for landscape beds, plants, and turf areas. Ensures this plan is followed and implanted safely and correctly.
- Calibrates fertilizer and chemical application equipment. Uses hand spreaders, push spreaders, hand sprayer, backpack sprayer, and riding sprayers.
- Ensures that chemicals, and other controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; maintains required records and strives to minimize the use of chemicals and other controlled products.
- Able to perform basic mathematic calculations, calibrations, and able to convert and understand fractions, decimals, and percentages when applying fertilizers and pesticides.
- Work involves operating equipment, tractors, blowers, performing litter control, landscaping, aerating, mowing, topdressing, vertical-mowing, and other cultural practices.
- Plans and assists with field improvement projects – such as sod work, drainage, grading, sprigging, and irrigation improvements.
- Assists with the installation and repair of irrigation systems.
- Maintains both natural and artificial turf grass sports fields.
- Prunes shrubs, edges beds, eliminates wild growth and weeds, and mulches landscape beds.
- Works with crew to perform landscape renovations and install new landscaping.
- Ensures the sports fields are cut and maintained to established standards.
- Instructs operators in safety precautions and procedure.
- Performs various skilled tasks in park structure maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling.
- Plans and installs new landscaping features; installs flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Trains personnel in tools and techniques.
- Operates dump or pickup truck.
- Maintains accurate records.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires High school diploma or GED plus additional vocational training in turf maintenance or landscape maintenance; with four (4) years of experience in landscape, athletic fields, golf course, and or spray technician; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Requires a State Commercial Pesticide Applicator License with Ornamental and Turf endorsement or must obtain within twelve (12) months of employment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Additional Requirements
- Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.
