Head Groundskeeper and Sports Turf Leader

MountainStar Sports, the parent company of the El Paso Chihuahuas and El Paso Locomotive, is seeking an experienced Head Groundskeeper and Sports Turf Director, with previous experience in baseball and soccer turf operations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Engage in the strategic and hands on management of all turf operations on a daily basis, including maintaining and handling field related physical duties to protect and manage turf and dirt surfaces.
  • Run the effective, detailed and proactive maintenance of the playing surfaces, surrounding turf areas, and the common grounds, including but not limited to, litter control, mowing and trimming, seeding, painting/striping field, fertilization and weed management, infield tarp placement and removal, skinned-area preparation, including pitchers mounds, bullpens, home plates and infield areas, edging foul lines, base lines and other transition points, pre-game setup and post-game closure of field for home games and other events, and set up and take down of baseball equipment for team practice and drills.
  • Engage in the management of an external contractor for all field transitions for soccer games.
  • Work closely with soccer operations to ensure turf is properly prepared and ready for all games.
  • Manage a strong staff of trained grounds employees working for our team both full-time and part-time seasonally.
  • Hires and manages the training all seasonal staff for turf operations.
  • Works closely with stadium operations staff and front office to help manage non sport related events and off-season facility projects.
  • Manages inventory of grounds materials including ordering and tracking material and usage.
  • Works with Senior Management to prepare budgets and operate under budgetary guidelines.
  • Creates and provides training for all full-time employees.
  • Makes regular field inspections to ensure the quality and safety of the playing field and surrounding turf.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with managers, coaches, umpires, etc.
  • Works closely with departmental scheduler for seasonal staff scheduling.
  • Ensures the safe and proper operation of all equipment utilized, maintaining that equipment in safe, clean, operable condition.
  • Manages the set-up, maintenance, and close down of field, including tarp pull.

Physical Demands & Working Environment: 

  • Required to work standing and walking around during season and events.
  • Sitting, standing, walking, reaching with arms and hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or crouching are all part of this position.
  • Must be able to handle weather related elements such as rain and heat.

Candidate must have a minimum of five – eight years experience in sports turf. We are unable to consider applicants that have not worked in either a baseball or soccer environment. The understanding of the needs of these two sports related to turf management is crucial.
