The Head Groundskeeper is responsible for repairing and maintaining the playing surface at the Fredericksburg Nationals Ballpark and its surrounding components as a safe, first-class baseball field by performing daily turf, dirt and water management; game preparation and short and long-term maintenance planning. This position requires minimal supervision and many times working alone. Head Grounds keeper will oversee and implement budget, staffing and procurement process within established guidelines.
Job Description:
- Responsible for the maintenance and repair of the playing field that includes, but is not limited to Shaw Sports turf management, infield skin, pitchers/bullpen mounds and home plate.
- Must follow Shaw Sports Turf recommended turf care plans.
- Responsible for maintenance of all equipment in order to extend the useful life to minimize repair and replacement costs
- Manage the irrigation system including proper water management of the playing surface
- Manage assigned group of employees by interviewing, hiring, and training; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Maintain financial records of all funds and labor expenses for department.
- Purchasing of all materials required to administer a management program using approved vendors and within approved protocol.
- Assist in development and implementation plans for emergency response due to inclement weather i.e. hurricane, tornado or other catastrophes.
- Implement training protocol for regulatory compliance, safety and technical needs. Document and record all training.
- Field set up and take down. Ensure that field meet all criteria as set forth by the Major League Baseball and Fredericksburg Nationals.
- Ensure performance of all work in a safe manner for the employee, subordinates, students and others that use the facilities.
- Maintain certifications; attend regional, state or national training.
- Achieves both company and client’s program integrity at high quality standards.
- Coordinate and execute infield tarp pulls.
- Coordinate field set up for amateur baseball games, concerts, and any other special events taking place on the playing surface.
- Other duties as assigned by ownership and management as opportunities arise.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years’ experience in managing high profile athletic fields.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Turf Management, Agronomy or related field. Associate’s degree will be considered with demonstrated experience and track record.
- Good written (report writing) and oral communication (public speaking) skills.
- Have the ability to operate athletic field / grounds management related equipment.
- Ability to work flexible and/or unscheduled hours.
- Experience managing staff is preferred.
- High Customer Service and quality attitude, with great communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet established goals and objectives.
- Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
- Ability to maintain organization in a fast paced, changing environment.
- Physical requirement (lifting 50 pounds many times per day, standing, squatting, and bending for long periods)
