Irrigation Specialist

Position Summary:
The Irrigation Specialist oversees the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of sport field irrigation systems throughout the season, including spring start-ups, ongoing service, system enhancements, and winterization for MSC clients.

Success Factors

  • Clear communication with clients to quickly perform repairs/installations on approved work will increase customer satisfaction.
  • While on-site, ensure that all noticed repairs are correctly fixed. Replace all worn or failing components. Properly backfill and clean up. Flush, test, and adjust all newly installed components.
  • Take the time while on site to correct or repair anything that prevents the system from running at maximum efficiency. Maximize the value of the service call to the customer.

Primary Responsibilities Daily Operations

Hydraulic Understanding: Proficient in commercial irrigation system hydraulics, including pipe sizing, friction loss assessment, optimal pressure determination, and ensuring uniform water distribution for efficiency.

Irrigation Scheduling and Programming: Develop and execute irrigation schedules based on sprinkler spacing and distribution rates, calculating appropriate run times for efficient water application.

Installation Expertise: Experienced in irrigation plan reading, system layout/planning, and executing leak-free connections with poly, PVC, and HDPE pipes using insert, glued, fused, and threaded methods.

Electrical Components: Comprehensive understanding of commercial irrigation electrical systems, including waterproof connections, conventional and 2-wire systems, grounding techniques, and wiring of new SMART controllers.

Troubleshooting Skills: Skilled in diagnosing and resolving irrigation system issues, repairing pipes and wires, adjusting irrigation head height and spray pattern accurately, and addressing performance concerns promptly.

Machine Operation: Competent in operating pipe pulling and trenching equipment, proficient in proper trench backfilling and compacting techniques. Strategic Operations Proactively identify ways to improve our customers’ irrigation systems, MSC’s irrigation installations, and maintenance practices, and find more ways for our team to work effectively and efficiently.

Continuously improve knowledge and skills and stay on top of new technologies in irrigation.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; additional vocational or technical training preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in commercial irrigation system installation and maintenance
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and diverse work environment
  • Experience with Sports Field Irrigation preferred
  • Positive and professional attitude

  • Strong time management and self-management skills
  • Understand and maintain the confidential nature of the company, employee, and customer information
  • Current driver’s license

Preferred Licenses and Specialized Experience

  • MN Power Limited Technician’s License
  • Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor’s License (CLIA) through the Irrigation Association
  • Certified Irrigation Contractor’s License (CIC) through the Irrigation Association
  • MN Commercial Driver’s License
  • Experience with Booster Pumps, VFDs, Pump Stations, and Well Pumps
  • Experience with SMART Controllers, Flow Meters, Weather Stations, and Moisture Sensors
  • Experience installing or maintaining drainage systems

Physical Requirements

  • The ability to work productively in all weather conditions.
  • The ability to frequently bend and lift and get up and down from a kneeling position often throughout the day.
  • Ability to safely lift 50 pounds regularly.
