Sports Turf Technician

Job Summary
The Facilities Maintenance Division supports multiple department areas such as mowing, ballfield maintenance and renovation, equipment repairs, facility maintenance, emergency response, special event support, and special projects. The Sports Turf Technician is primarily responsible for tasks associated with the routine applications of pesticides and fertilizers to ballfields and other maintained turf areas in the parks. Herbicides and pesticides will be applied; pruned, installed, and cared for; root flare excavations, invasive exotic management, field editing, and precision fertilizing will also be performed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs specialized turf work. Implements pesticides, carries out complex pruning, watering, soil testing, and fertilization, and assesses, sets up, and supervises.
  • Inspects County facilities to identify unsafe conditions and report necessary repairs.
  • Procures bids and creates purchase orders for vendor services or acquires materials or equipment; adheres to County and PRCS purchasing guidelines.
  • Utilizes machines, vehicles, and tools, adhering to established safety standards; properly cleans, greases, and stores equipment and vehicles; and reports any problems.
  • Accurate records and comprehensive reports are kept regarding the maintenance of fields, playgrounds, and facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of related work experience in horticulture or arboriculture; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Proficiency in the principles, techniques, and best practices utilized in turf management, grounds maintenance, and landscape construction is crucial.
  • Knowledge regarding the federal, state, and local regulations that govern their usage.
  • Ability to perform calculations and calibrations necessary to determine application of pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Skill in using backpack sprayers, chainsaws, blowers, water trailers with pumps, trucks towing trailers, and mobile computing devices for field reporting, pesticide record-keeping, and inventory management is a must.
  • Proficiency in drafting technical reports.
  • Hold or obtain a CDL (Class A) with passenger, airbrake, and/or tanker endorsements within six (6) months of hire.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements
Pass pre-employment criminal, credit and DMV backgrounds. Valid driver’s license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification depending on assigned department).

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS: 

  • Valid Registered Technician certification
  • Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator and Certified Fertilizer Applicator certifications REQUIRED within 6 months of employment.
  • County, e-learning and MOAT trainings as required.
  • Department may require additional certifications related to the position.
  • First Aid/CPR certifications within 30 days of hire; OSHA certifications such as forklift, bucket truck, and lift truck are required within department timeframes.
