Parks and Recreation Maintenance Technician

General Duties:
Under general supervision, performs responsible work in coordinating and participating in the daily maintenance of Town parks and recreation facilities. Parks and Recreation Maintenance Specialist is responsible for general park maintenance. Work includes mowing, trimming, cleaning restroom facilities, athletic field preparation, and light maintenance and repair. Work requires regular public contact in enforcing Town policies and handling public requests for service. Employee must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and themselves. Employees are subject to hazards in parks maintenance work including, but not limited to, working both inside and outside in a variety of weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, pesticides, and regularly lifting above 50 pounds.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance, and repair work of Town parks and recreation facilities.
  • Mows, trims, waters, aerates, prunes, weeds, and fertilizes grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields and related facilities.
  • Maintains parks facilities, such as regular restroom and picnic shelters cleaning.
  • Complete minor carpentry, plumbing, and masonry repairs.
  • Operates specialized equipment such as power mowers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, aerators, tractors, and other equipment.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs playground equipment and fences.
  • Sprays various fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in Town parks and recreation areas.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
  • Follows proper safety procedures and precautions in relation to all work performed.
  • Drives vehicles and operates equipment as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Job Requirements:
Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and have or obtain a NC Pesticide applicator license within 1 year of employment. Candidate must be able to successfully pass a background check and drug screen. Regular hours of work are Monday – Friday. Occasional nights and weekends are required for special events. This position is eligible for overtime pay. Special consideration will be given for applicants with experience with minor carpentry, plumbing, and/or masonry experience.

Salary Range: Expected hiring range, $33,396 – $46,023 + benefits. Starting salary dependent on experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for overtime pay. Education and Experience: High school graduate or GED, and a minimum of 1-year experience in groundskeeping/turf maintenance, athletic field maintenance, or facility maintenance and repair.
