Turf Specialist II

Job Summary

The Sports Turf Specialist II employee is responsible for the overall maintenance and upkeep of Mitchell Field, Elbel Field, Palmer Field, and the Sports Coliseum. This position helps to prepare these facilities for general programmatic use by Intramural Sports, Club Sports, and facility rentals. Assistance is also provided for facility maintenance projects in the other Recreational Sports facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Sports Turf – 35%
    • Perform daily set-up duties including mowing, edging, watering, weeding, and trimming.
    • Diagnose turf and pest problems.  Determine appropriate course of application including pesticide application and fertilization.
    • Determine correct chemical application using specialized equipment.
    • Groom, clean, maintain, and plow snow from artificial turf fields.
    • Prepare, measure and paint field layout patterns on natural and artificial turf surfaces.
  • Maintenance – 30%
    • Operate field grooming equipment and machinery, including trucks, tractors, loaders, mowers, mechanical seeders and tillers, power and hand fertilizing equipment and other motorized vehicles and equipment.
    • Perform maintenance and repair on vehicles, equipment, and motorized/non-motorized hand tools (paint machines, grass trimmers, mowers, tractors, top dressers, turf sweepers, gators, Tool Cat and attachments) to include disassembling, cleaning, lubricating, replacing worn or damaged parts, and reassembling.
    • Maintain records of all maintenance of equipment and artificial turf, as well as application records and product inventory for natural grass.
    • Seasonal opening and closing procedures including but not limited to drinking fountains, canopies, lights, goals, tennis nets, basketball hoops, windscreens, etc.
    • Seasonal snow and ice removal from walkways, steps, and ramps around structure and building entrances utilizing blowers, blades, and hand operated tools.
  • Irrigation – 20%
    • Install and repair irrigation systems including valves, sprinklers, electrical components, and controllers.
    • Operate irrigation systems using automated computer programs.
    • Calibrate irrigation systems to achieve ideal precipitation rates.
    • Maintain pump house systems including pressurizing.
  • Event Preparation – 10%
    • Move, transport, set-up, and take down equipment
    • Load and unload equipment from trucks by hand
  • Miscellaneous – 5%
    • Clean assigned areas of work and equipment.
    • Order and/or purchase parts, meet with and coordinate vendors and supply ordering, as needed.
    • Attend trainings and/or professional development opportunities as assigned
