The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for a Spray & Turf Specialist for Facilities Management-Grounds. This is a full-time, permanent staff position.

Purpose of the Position: The Spray & Turf Specialist position has critical oversight daily of turf and plant disease care throughout campus. It incorporates all Spray Technician duties, including management of chemical use and storage for the whole of Grounds Department. Tracks the certifications and credentials of all certified applicators on the grounds team, serving as the subject matter expert on all spray topics, (turf, tree and ornamental). Functions as Turf Specialist for all non-playing fields turf campus-wide. Trains and advise grounds employees on proper IPM practices, ensures uniformity and conducts regular field inspections. Oversees turf quality and plant health campus wide. Advises supervisors and crew leaders on recommended actions to improve turf and plant care as well as chemical usage. Orders and maintains all spray and turf supplies, chemical usage and handling of related state inspections or oversees vendors used for related work.

Salary: $45,007 – $54,000

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school and five years’ experience in the area of work assigned, three of which were in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Duties: The Specialist performs daily oversight of turf and plant disease care throughout Campus.
Performs or oversees all Spray Tech duties, including management of chemical use and storage for the whole of Grounds Department. Tracking the certification and credentials of all certified applicators on the grounds team, serving as the subject matter expert on all spray topics, (turf, tree and ornamental). Functions as Turf specialist for all non-playing fields turf campus-wide. Trains, advises, ensures uniformity and conducts regular field inspections. Oversees turf quality and plant health Campus Wide. Advises supervisors and crew leaders on recommended actions to improve turf and plant care as well as chemical usage. Orders and maintains all spray and turf supplies, chemical usage and handling of related state inspections or oversees vendors used for related work. Oversee IPM for chemical use throughout campus, as well as the continuity of turf management throughout Campus. Plant flowers, bulbs, trees and shrubs in accordance to plans. Cultivate, mulch, and remove weeds from established plant beds. Prune trees and shrubs to ensure proper health and vigor of plant material. Fertilize trees, shrubs, flowers and lawn areas following established fertilization program. Seed newly prepared lawn areas and reseed established lawn areas as required. Apply chemical spray applications to plant material under the direction of licensed pesticide applicator. Monitor and train others in the proper application of herbicides or pesticides as necessary. Mow grass, trim trees and shrubs; remove trash, and remove snow as needed. Contribute to the overall appearance and condition of the university’s buildings, academic and office spaces. Assist in maintaining the University facilities in good working order and maintaining an overall pleasant working, teaching, and learning environment. Support the associated grounds and landscaping requirements due to the development of expanded highly maintained landscaped areas of campus. Maintenance to include: herbicide, fungicide, insecticide, and fertilization treatments which requires basic knowledge of materials, elemental horticulture, and the skill to fulfill these duties; litter control, weed control, trimming of undergrowth and pruning of trees, rip rap and erosion repair, upkeep of drainage structures and snow and ice removal along walkways and steps.
