Director, Sports Turf Management (SHRA)

The Director of Sports Turf Management position is responsible for supervision of the landscape, maintenance, and turf grass program (natural and artificial) management for the Athletics Department. This includes oversight of all athletic fields and surrounding grounds including Brooks Field, UNCW Baseball Practice Field, Boseman Field, UNCW Soccer Stadium, UNCW Soccer Practice Field, and Harold Greene Track Complex. This position supervises staff assigned to the area of Grounds & Sports Turf which includes an Assistant Director of Sports Turf and two Senior Groundskeepers. The Sports Turf Specialist must ensure all outdoor playing and practice environments are safe and clean.

Responsibilities include:

  • Game management for UNCW Baseball and Softball; field lining, field maintenance, field repair, irrigation management and waste management
  • Scheduling and supervising landscape and turf grass maintenance including mowing, fertilizing, top dressing, aerification, handling of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, irrigation installation and repair.
  • Overseeing and recommending the purchase, maintenance, and repair of equipment and tools used on sports fields.
  • Collaborating with the Associate AD for Facilities & Event Management to discuss current and future projects and to provide progress reports.
  • Acting as primary liaison for sports turf meetings, providing intel and future operational plans
  • Assisting the designated game manager in event management functions, facility management and crowd control
  • Developing and implementing a fertilizer and pest management program and business administration of budgets, timesheets and forecasting future repair and replacement programs
  • Managing daily/annual maintenance programs, on-site construction management, as well as providing support and coordination for Athletics Operations in the preparation, planning, and on-site supervision for all practices, games, and events hosted by the Athletics Department and University
  • Managing all renovations, upgrades, or new natural grass facilities
  • Administering tasks with the associated budgetary, purchasing, and accounting delegations

Note – some weekend and evening work is required.
