Essential Job Functions
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Facilities for Athletics/University Recreation/Kress Events Center and is responsible for directing full time staff and student employees in grounds operations. The position requires the ability to direct and instruct employees in safety training, safe operation of grounds equipment, and safe work practices. The position warrants a knowledge of smart turf practices as you will take the lead role in care of all Athletic and intermural fields, and turf areas. The position requires knowledge of best pesticide management practices, and the ability to safely apply pesticides and herbicides. The position also requires the knowledge of and participation in all landscape construction projects. It involves having the knowledge of, and ability to operate a wide variety of small and large equipment in grounds tasks, and snow and ice removal. You need the knowledge and skills for safe operating of different types and sizes of chainsaws when needed. The job requires the ability to participate in grounds mechanics and maintenance of all equipment assigned to the department. The position requires knowledge and training in smart turf and landscape practices.

What You’ll Do

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Perform year-round grounds maintenance and improvement activities as assigned or in assigned zone of responsibility
  • Lead in landscape construction projects assigned to this department
  • Lead in the final grading and seedbed preparation for lawns and other turf areas
  • Operate all mechanical equipment assigned to this department including trucks, backhoes, loaders, trenchers, chippers, chainsaws, and related equipment
  • Assist mechanics in maintain all equipment assigned to this department
  • Develops and schedules unit operational work plans
  • Schedules logistics and secures resources for the completion of established projects
  • Communicates unit goals and objectives, implements unit operational policies and procedures, and provides training and feedback to ensure safety and compliance
  • Prepares periodic reports and financial statements, and records progress, status, or other special reports for leadership or external agencies



  • High School Diploma at time of application
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a valid driver’s license upon appointment
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a commercial pesticide applicator license (Category 3.0 Turf and Landscape) upon appointment


  • Associate’s Degree
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Knowledge of safe and proper operation and maintenance of lawn care equipment
  • Safe and effective application of fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides
  • Knowledge of proper methods of planting, pruning, and maintaining shrubs and flowers
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and operation skills in snow and ice removal operation
  • Knowledge, skills, and operations of safe chainsaw usage


  • Physical strength and stamina to perform required work, including being able to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, lift up to 80 pounds, and work on your feet for a long period of time
  • Ability to tolerate extreme outdoor ranges on a year-round basis
  • Ability to work outdoors a majority of hours
  • Occasionally needs to be sitting for long periods of time

Conditions of Appointment

  • Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment. This position will work fully in-person on campus, with normal work hours from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Some weekend and evening hours will be required. Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work screen will be conducted on the finalist(s). Compensation and Benefits

  • Minimum salary of $60,000.
  • This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Benefit Details

The UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees. The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%. This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually. Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
