Sports Turf Canada, the Canadian sports turf managers association, announced the recipients of its scholarships.
The Robert Sheard Scholarship
Fedja Muzur received the Robert Sheard Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant; currently enrolled in and have completed two semesters of education in a postsecondary program in turf management at a recognized college or university in Canada; or, have completed the University of Guelph’s Turf Managers’ Short Course, or equivalent, in the current year; and have a desire to pursue a career in the sports turf industry.
Muzur has been in the industry for 8 years. He completed his business management diploma from BCIT when he got his first job in the parks/turf industry working for the District of West Vancouver. Then he got a job at the district of North Vancouver and a part time job at Seymour Golf and Country Club during the summers.
“I reached out and got information on the Turf Management Program at Kwantlen,” said Muzur. “I figured out a schedule where I would work three days a week part time for the district and take a full load of courses. My reason for attending turf school was to get a job at Northlands as I always called it my happy place as it’s my home course and escape from my busy schedule. Less than a month into my first semester a level 3 full-time maintenance position came up. I went through the interview process and got the job based mostly on how passionate I was about working there. The first few months at Northlands have been like a dream, every morning I get up while the rest of the world is sleeping with a huge smile on my face. This fall, I will be taking a full load (4 courses) and travelling from North Vancouver to Langley 4 days a week, working 5 days a week, coaching 3 days (4 times a week). I hope to one day be able to give back to future turf management students.”
The Michael J. Blandon Scholarship
Rob Renda was named the recipient of the Michael J. Blandon Scholarship.
The scholarship recipient will stipulate that the scholarship be used to attend an education event in Canada and be someone without access to funding to normally attend such an event; apply by providing a one-page letter summarizing why they are a deserving candidate; supply a letter of support from their direct supervisor confirming the location of their employ; be actively employed in an environment where managing sport related turfgrass is part of their department’s work scope; and be a Canadian resident.
Renda is an aspiring turfgrass professional, currently employed at The Thornhill Club in Thornhill, Ontario. The club offers high-quality golf, curling, tennis, and athletics at the facility. After his second season working, he became an Assistant in Training in the Turf department. He is currently enrolled at Humber College in the final semesters of the PGM (Professional Golf Management) Program. His career goal is to become a high-class superintendent which was inspired after being surrounded by all the great work and the team at the Thornhill Club.
