Turf war: a story being played out around the country

Scott Stafford, writing for The Berkshire Eagle, reports on the battle of a synthetic surface
in Williamstown, MA:

The two teams squared off on either side of an artificial
turf field.

But this turf field hasn’t been built yet: It has been
proposed for installation as the new Mount Greylock Regional School football
field.

At a public forum set up by the School Committee, supporters
and opponents turned out to make their case for or against the use of
artificial turf for the field.

Opponents encouraged the committee to consider installing an
organically grown natural turf field, a process they said would provide
superior turf and help the environment, and reduce injuries. But others
maintained that turf fields require less maintenance and have a longer life
cycle, and provide a safer playing surface than a poorly maintained natural
turf field.
