Penn State Extension to offer pruning workshop

Penn State Extension will be offering pruning workshops at three locations in late March and early April.

The locations will be:

  • Luzerne County: 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 20, at Penn State’s Wilkes-Barre campus, 44 University Drive, Dallas.
  • Dauphin County: 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. April 2, at Penn State’s Harrisburg campus, 777 W. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown.
  • Bucks County: 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. April 3, at Bucks County Community College, 275 Swamp Road, Newtown.

The event is designed for landscapers, grounds managers, arborists, and county and municipal employees.

 Participants will learn to:

  • Renovate and maintain evergreen and deciduous shrubs.
  • Prune trees correctly to reduce the potential for decay.
  • Distinguish between removal, reduction and heading cuts.
  • Perform various types of tree and shrub pruning.
  • Thin out small flowering trees.
  • Select and use the proper tools to prune.
  • Understand the safety requirements from the American National Standard for Arboricultural Operations.
  • Perform work that meets the American National Standards Institute standard for pruning.

Instructors will teach pruning theory, terminology and plant biology during the morning classroom session. In the afternoon, a hands-on outdoor session will apply pruning theory in the field. Organizers ask that attendees dress for the weather. Participants also should bring along pruning tools.

Continuing education units will be available from the International Society of Arboriculture. Participants also can earn Pennsylvania certified horticulturist credits.

Space is limited, so preregistration is required. Registration deadlines vary by location. The registration fee is $45 for the Dallas event and $80 for the workshops in Middletown and Newtown. The fee includes lunch and reference publications.

More information about the workshop is available on the Penn State Extension website at https://extension.psu.edu/pruning-for-professionals.
